Two-stage operation starts here. The RP14AY24AJ2NA outdoor heat pump and RH2TY2417STANNJ air handler form a 24,000 BTU R-454B split system that runs on low stage the vast majority of the year and only steps to high stage on design days. Longer, gentler run cycles mean tighter temperature control, quieter operation and noticeably better humidity removal than a single-stage unit of the same capacity, which is why this is the most-requested size for smaller Florida homes and townhouses.
Is a 2 Ton Heat Pump System the Right Size?
At 24,000 BTU per hour, a 2 ton heat pump generally serves 900 to 1,200 square feet of conditioned area. Two-bedroom townhouses, small ranch homes, coastal cottages and well-insulated slab houses commonly land in this range. The load calculation, not the floor plan, determines whether 2 tons is correct.
Duct leakage, attic R-value, single versus double pane glass, shading, and the direction the largest windows face can swing the calculated load by half a ton in either direction. With a two-stage compressor there is also less penalty for being slightly generous on capacity, because low stage runs at roughly two-thirds output and keeps cycle lengths long, but a system that is a full ton oversized will still leave the house cool and damp.
